Neighbours raced to rescue two men who were inside the vehicle before they found a cache of weapons and drugs on the back seat.

“The driver was trapped and twisted beneath the steering wheel and I just held his hand until the ambulance came,” one resident said.

Both men were taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with the driver fighting for his life in critical condition.

Police seized a gel blaster, knife and nitrous oxide canisters from the vehicle, alongside bags and multiple mobile phones.

“They’re all Gucci bags and they’re all identical,” one resident said.

Police say the car was not stolen and there was nothing to indicate any crimes were committed in the lead up to the crash.
