Man charged after claiming to be learner driver, allegedly attempting to abduct woman

A Queensland man has been hit with several charges after allegedly hatching a plot to abduct a woman known to him.

Police allege the 24-year-old man from Sunnybank Hills, Brisbane, claimed to be a learner driver, booking a driving lesson from an Acacia Ridge address yesterday.

“It will be further alleged when the instructor arrived, the man produced a knife and forced the instructor to drive to Kittyhawk Avenue at Inala shopping centre with the intention of kidnapping a woman known to him,” a statement read.

Once at the shopping centre, the driving instructor was able to escape the vehicle, rushing to get help.

He was not injured during the incident.

The 24-year-old was arrested by police in the shopping centre car park.

The woman he was attempting to abduct was found safe and well.

The man has been charged with deprivation of liberty, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and attempted kidnapping, domestic violence.

He was denied bail and appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
