Anzac Day 2022: Will you get a public holiday for Anzac Day this year?
Posted On April 19, 2022
Anzac Day on 25 April is one of Australia’s most important national occasions that commemorates military action made by Australian and New Zealand troops in the First World War.
To recognise this, Australians are generally given Anzac Day as a public holiday to attend dawn ceremonies and to treat the day with the reverence that it deserves.
But if Anzac Day falls on a weekend, not every state has a replacement public holiday on the next business day.
Here’s a quick state-by-state guide:
Anzac Day in 2022 falls on a Monday, meaning it will be recognised as a public holiday.
According to the Public Holidays Act 2010, an additional public holiday will only be given in NSW if the following events fall on a weekend: Australia Day, New Year’s Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
Victorians will get a public holiday for Anzac Day this year.
In Victoria Anzac Day is treated as a half-restricted trading day. This means most shops and businesses will be closed from 12:01am to 1pm on 25 April.
Some shops are exempt from this however, including chemists, petrol stations, cafes, takeaway outlets and hire outlets.
Queenslanders will receive the day off on Monday April 25.

Curiously in South Australia the Holidays Act 1910 (SA) prescribes every Sunday to be a public holiday.
