Coles unveils ‘supersized’ bulk products in discount war
Posted On April 19, 2022
Supermarket giant Coles is taking a leaf out of competitor Costco’s retail strategy book, offering “supersized” varieties of household products.
Available now for a limited time, Coles will be offering 44 household staples in bulk sizes that promise larger discounts than smaller-packaged varieties.
Among the supersized products is a 2kg tub of Bega Peanut Butter, and 18-pack of Maggi’s 2 Minute Noodles, a 1.32kg tin of Milo and a 1kg tub of the much-loved Japanese mayonnaise Kewpie.
A greater breakdown of the supersized products – and what they cost – can be read below.
Coles General Manager for Grocery Leanne White said the “Big Pack Value Range” was the supermarket’s way of helping to address the soaring cost of living.
“We know Australians are looking for value more than ever and offering some of our popular products in bulk is one way we are helping our customers save time and money on their weekly grocery shop,” Ms White said.
“Buying in bulk works really well for families who are buying the same products regularly so can stock up on their favourites at a cheaper cost overall.
“Some of the products can last an average family a couple of months, which means customers save time shopping in store, while managing the family budget.”
Perhaps the most well-known bulk size retailer is US juggernaut Costco, which operates 13 warehouses in Australia.
Infamous for its near-outrageous bulk sizes, Costco operates a slightly different model to the major grocers by forcing shoppers to become members to access discounted goods.
Membership in Australia starts from $55, with most household consumers paying $60 a year to shop at Costco.
