Thousands of unnecessary calls to Triple Zero every month in Victoria

A call about a child who felt dizzy after spinning around is among the more than 90,000 unnecessary calls made to Victoria‘s triple zero service in the past six months.
Ambulance Victoria is continuing its desperate plea for Victorians to only call triple zero for emergencies, revealing that about one in five calls to the service do not need emergency help.
Ambulance Victoria’s acting Chief Operations Officer Anthony Carlyon told 3AW this morning it was “really common” for people to call triple zero simply wanting a health check-up.
He said a recent really “bizarre” call to the service had been from someone who couldn’t get Spotify – an online music streaming service – to work for them.
“They were withdrawing from alcohol and they wanted to listen to music,” Carlyon said.
Someone who pricked themselves with an acupuncture needle to see if it was sharp has also called triple zero recently.
Carlyon said people not being able to sleeping was also a common reason calls were made for ambulances, while many people also called triple zero in search of rapid antigen tests.
He said the unnecessary calls were tying up essential resources, with the issues better suited to be managed by GPs, the nurse-on-call service or a pharmacy.
“We want Victorians to help save triple zero or emergencies, not treat it as just an easy point of call when you want some advice,” he said.
“We want to be there for the sickest Victorians.”
Ambulance Victoria has today put a call out on social media advising people the service cannot “fix your fence”.

Carlyon also asked 3AW listeners to not mistreat or abuse triple zero call takers or paramedics for advising them to utilise another non-emergency service.
“It’s far too frequent,” he said.
