Man charged after assaulting Coles worker with shopping basket

NSW Police have charged a 36-year-old man after he allegedly struck a Coles employee with a shopping basket at Wallsend Coles in Newcastle yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the supermarket on Kokera Street at about 2.30pm after a 52-year-old worker was assaulted, causing a serious medical episode.

He was then taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

The Dog Squad and Newcastle City Police arrested the 36-year-old on University Drive at Birmingham Gardens at about 7.15pm before taking him to Newcastle Police station.

He was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment under police guard.

He was later charged with several offences including assault.

The offender was refused bail by Newcastle Local Court and is due to appear on May 16.
