Apple discontinues the iPod after 21 years

It’s official – Apple will no longer continue to make its iconic iPod after more than two decades in the market.

Making the announcement today, Apple said it will continue to sell its current iPod touch until supplies last.

After that, Apple music fans will have to access their tunes from the tech giant’s multitude of other devices including iPhone, iPad, Mac and its HomePod Mini.

Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak said the “spirit” of the iPod will live on.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to and shared,” Joswiak said.

“Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad and Apple TV.

“And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for Spatial Audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover and experience music.”

The death of the iPod marks a turning point in how consumers engage and consume music, as the market turns from music ownership into subscription based on-demand platforms such as Spotify.

When the original iPod was introduced in 2001, it’s cultural impact was astounding: While other MP3 players existed in the market, none had the same song capacity or the same cultural “cool”.

The original device was the first in the world to hold 1,000 songs and boast a battery life of around 10 hours.

Apple’s associated marketing campaign which featured shadow dancers wearing the iPod’s distinctive white headphones further cemented its status as the MP3 player to have.
